Unlike an invitation, a save the date invitation is brief and to the point. It simply tells the recipient that there is an event planned for such and such day at such and such time, and that more details will follow in an actual invitation.
Why wouldn't you? If you are planning a party, then you'll want your guests to be able to attend the party.
